Past that, it was mostly announcements of announcements. Daniel Benson reported on CyclingNews, prior to the Dennis announcement, that BMC had some major shakeups planned for 2015, with as many as a third of the team's riders out of contract (Thor Hushovd has already announced his retirement). Cadel Evans will likely stop after next January's Tour Down Under as well. But specifics, at least from the always circumspect BMC team, were few.

With Dennis on a two year deal, he was likely to follow Peiper to BMC, and the early transfer just speeds up the timeline. Garmin manager Jonathan Vaughters wished his rider well, saying that the mid season transfer made sense and that it could help to promote "major progress in the way the sport of cycling handles rider transfers."
Sunday at the San Sebastian Classic; Saxo Bank continuing on as a co sponsor; and as for the third, it's a wildcard much like team owner Oleg Tinkov, who tweeted today that he plans to sue the UCI for not disclosing Roman Kreuziger's biopassport investigation when the team signed him last fall from Astana.
My guess? No team. Not for 2015, and not unless Alonso has recently warmed to the idea of taking over an existing team's WorldTour license (Cannondale is the most Nike Free Trainer 3.0 V5 likely candidate). But I'd be surprised to see Alonso formally in the sport in 2015.

August 1 isn't an obviously big date in pro cycling. The Tour de France is finished, it's not an Olympic year, and the Vuelta Espana is weeks away. But it's an important day because it marks the beginning of the sport's official transfer season.
What's next: Jonathan Vaughters steadfastly declined to discuss team news for 2015 at the Tour de France, but promised an update in August. He's already signed Andrew Talansky to an extension, and the prevailing industry guess is that Garmin Sharp will combine with Cannondale for 2015, with Garmin in a supporting sponsor role but not on the title line.
Tinkoff, the lead player in the Sagan Sweeps, announced future announcements, and even helpfully supplied the dates (August 3, 7, and 9), but gave no outward hint as to what. We can guess: Sagan's signing, which might be announced Free Runs 4.0 Mens
According to UCI rules, teams are allowed to negotiate contracts with riders for the following year at any point (and most do, starting as early as February), but they cannot sign binding deals or announce them until August 1.
For Dennis, the lure was apparently to work with fellow Aussie Allan Peiper again. Peiper was Garmin's lead sports director in 2012, and when Dennis signed a contract that August for the 2013 season, he specifically mentioned Peiper's presence as a major reason for picking Garmin. But Peiper moved to BMC in the offseason, leaving Dennis to race for Garmin without the mentor who'd brought him in.
But August 1 was, this year, more important for something we didn't hear: any firm news about the long discussed FACT (Fernando Nike Free 5.0 Girl Shoes
The biggest news was actually Rohan Dennis's mid season transfer from Garmin to BMC. It's effective immediately, and BMC plans for Dennis to start the Vuelta Espana for them. Mid season transfers are not unprecedented, but they're extremely rare. By UCI rules they can't happen prior to August 1. But they almost never happen anyway (the last one was when Alessandro Petacchi "retired" from Lampre last May only to sign with Omega Pharma Quick Step in August).
That makes the first of the month much anticipated, as we finally begin to find out the truth or falsity of all the rumors we've been hearing for months. Will Peter Sagan sign with Tinkoff Saxo? Will the much discussed Alonso Project finally roll? What will happen to the Cannondale team? On August 1, we begin to find out.
August 1 is important to them because it's the date that any team wishing to race the following season must file its initial registration paperwork, which includes information on the required bank guarantee, as well as sample contracts with riders. If the FACT project is going to go in 2015, today was the first step.
Emphasis on begin. Despite the potential for big announcements, Friday was low on major news. The two biggest names in the transfer news were Lars Boom's move to Astana and Nacer Bouhanni's much mooted switch to Cofidis. That's it.
